San Antonio celebrates Black History Month every February to honor its African heritage. As we celebrate Black American contributions to our city and nation, from the Civil Rights Movement to modern accomplishments, it is an opportunity to recognize their accomplishments.
All year round, San Antonio celebrates Black Heritage. But but we have some awesome events happening this month, including art exhibitions, film screenings, and tours. There and the Alamo City offers plenty of opportunities to explore Black history and culture.
Celebrate Black History in San Antonio by participating in these activities:

As part of DreamWeek, Charles Floyd celebrates Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

With Charles Floyd conducting A Celebration of MLK for DreamWeek, featuring bass-baritone Timothy Jones, celebrate Black History Month early. DreamWeek honors the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, along with the Philharmonic.

A Wild Art & Write Week
January 29th, 1 p.m. until 4 p.m.

The McNutt Sculpture Garden will host Art in the Wild & Write in the Wild, where San Antonio Poet Laureate Andrea Vocab Sanderson will lead audiences in a commune with nature. Drawings, watercolors, or clay sculpture will be your medium. A Life in the Wild exhibit will follow afterward.
Alamo: A Black History Walk on the River
February 9th, 7:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m.
Where: Virtual Event
Walk in the River: A Black History of the Alamo City wherever you want! During this virtual screening, the documentary Walk on the River on the Black Experience in San Antonio will be shown. A number of themes are explored in the film, including religion, education, politics, social organizations, and the experience of living in a community.
Black Restaurant Week San Antonio

This 8-day event, celebrating its fifth year, features Black-owned restaurants, food trucks, and culinary professionals all over the Alamo City. Take part in the Tastiest Week in San Antonio and taste great food and wine! Whatever your taste, you can find a restaurant that offers Jamaican, Nigerian, Soul Food, BBQ, burgers, and more!

Although their Black History River Cruise has sold out for February, SAAACAM does have great events to celebrate the month. IKEA Live Oak and SAAACAM team up on February 13th to host the Black Resistance at the Lunch Counter exhibit. The event is free, but registration is required. Visitors will enjoy complimentary breakfast. Additionally, SAAACAM welcomes all to the Green Book Historical Marker unveiling on February 22nd from 2:00-4:00 p.m. Immerse yourself in history as you travel around San Antonio for the unveiling of the historic markers providing context to safe places for Negro Motorists during the Jim Crow era. The event is also free, but registration is required.

In Between Yesterday and Tomorrow: Perspectives from Black Contemporary Artists of San Antonio, you'll be able to view the work of local Black artists and gain a sense of their cultural and personal experiences. It is through drawing, painting, photography, mixed media, digital media, assemblage, sculpture, and quilting that 18 artists offer unique perspectives on Black history and identity, family dynamics, social connections, personal human experience, spirituality, and resilience.

This African American Community Archive & Museum in San Antonio, affectionately known as SAAACAM (Say-Cam), is located within the Historic La Villita Arts Village. SAAACAM organizes many educational events promoting the city's Black Community. While learning about San Antonio's Black History, enjoy a Black History River Cruise along the downtown River Walk. Or go to their Black History Film Series, which includes free screenings of some of the greatest movies about black people. They also have an actual location that houses artifacts, timelines, etc.

San Pedro Creek Culture Park combines architectural design and historical preservation. Discover old San Antonio and find hidden gems like the St. James African Methodist Episcopal Church cornerstone that dates back to 1875, discovered during an archeological dig.
