Cinco de Mayo may be a fun holiday to celebrate, but do you know how it came about? The Mexican Army defeated the French in the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1982, resulting in Cinco de Mayo. After completing our mini-history lesson, let's take a look at ways to celebrate in San Antonio.

In Historic Market Square in San Antonio, there is the largest Mexican Market in the nation. Take a stroll from these shops to liven up your morning. Known affectionately as El Mercado, it hosts over 100 shops and stalls owned by locals. Throughout the Weekend, Market Square celebrates Cinco de Mayo with live bands, folklorico dancers, authentic mariachi music, artisan stalls, and more. Those interested in attending this event may do so for free.
