Celebrating SAN ANTONIO'S BLACK HERITAGE AND LEGACY DURING MLK MONTH AND DREAMWEEK 2023
Archive and Museum San Antonio African American Community
There is a strong sense of pride in our community in San Antonio, and our city celebrates its diversity often. Our Black community will be celebrated in January with some of our largest events. Black heritage and contributions to San Antonio are celebrated during MLK March and DreamWeek. Join us in January for these events:
MLK MARCH
There is no other city in the country with a more significant MLK march than the Alamo City. This march is held every January on the city's Eastside in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., one of the nation's most well-known and revered civil rights leaders. During the MLK March, the city's MLK Commission asks the community for ideas on a theme, and participants are invited to create signs and build their attendance around it. In this year's theme, we will be focusing on Together, We Can Be THE Dream.
In spite of the COVID-19 pandemic affecting past years' plans, over 300000 people from all over the country attend the MLK march every year. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a great time to celebrate the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in the Alamo City.
DREAMWEEK
It doesn't matter what your interest is, there is a DreamWeek event in San Antonio for you. In honor of one of Dr. Martin Luther King's most iconic speeches, DreamWeek aims to continue the legacy of his work and advance his teachings. Every January, DreamWeek takes place throughout San Antonio and is a city-wide series of events that run almost two weeks long. DreamWeek began in San Antonio, but has grown exponentially over the years and is now shared and streamed worldwide. At over 50 locations, over 200 events culminate to share ideas and initiate conversations about minority community challenges.
THE INTERSECTION OF FOOD, RACISM, HEALTH, & CULTURE AT THE TABLE
What is the significance of food in culture? Immeasurably significant. Rockie Gilford, Nina Carr, and Dr. Jasmine Harris lead a discussion at At the Table on food justice, health, and food and land sovereignty, and how this affects the Black community. There is no charge for this event, created by Black Restaurant Week San Antonio.
DEANWEEK PARTY & BOAT TOUR for Black History Day
A light pre-tour appetizer and a tour of the San Antonio River Walk will be included. The DreamWeek Black History Day Party & Boat Tour will provide all of that. Here in Texas, Black Americans have left a rich legacy that has shaped San Antonio into the city it is today. Tickets must be purchased in advance for the 11:30am tour.
A DREAMWEEK GALLERY TALK ON PIERRE DAURAS GOOD HENRY (1947): REPRESENTATION AND IDENTITY
He painted portraits of his students and colleagues at the college he taught during the late 1940s and early 1950s. His employer rejected the portraits solely because the subjects were Black, to his distress. The curator of art Regina Palm invites visitors to learn more about Pierre Dauras Good Henry's history and symbolism.
The Quilt: Musical Bridges Around the World Art Gallery Opening Reception
You are invited to take a look behind-the-scenes at The Quilt: A Living History of African American Music's cast, crew, musicians and production process. A collection of graphics from the film is included in the exhibition, beautifully designed by Coral Diaz and Noelle Artigue. Visit this Dreamweek exhibition by appointment between January 21 and March 31, 2023. To schedule an appointment or to purchase works online, visit mbaw.org / art.
DREAMWEEK: PASSION WITH PURPOSE
Pinkertons BBQ, craft beer, art galleries, and live entertainment will be available at Legacy Park during DreamWeek: Passion with Purpose. Keep an eye out for the display of community-created art depicting ideas about how to make San Antonio a better place.
THE WILD ART & WRITE WEEK

Art in the Wild & Write in the Wild offers the next chance to see and hear San Antonio Poet Laureate Andrea Vocab Sanderson! Visits to the McNutt Sculpture Garden at the Briscoe Western Art Museum San Antonio are the perfect setting for DreamWeeks themes of representation and identification.
